It was a Saturday. But we didn\u2019t mind. We were going hiking.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Since moving to Hartbeespoort a few months ago, I\u2019ve been called to by the mountains that surround us in the area. These high natural features show off in the morning light with their interesting formations and demand to be explored.\u00a0 These are the Magaliesberg Mountains. And explore them we did.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bushbabyblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG_4657.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-992\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-992\" src=\"http:\/\/bushbabyblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG_4657-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Magaliesberg hike\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bushbabyblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG_4657-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/bushbabyblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG_4657-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bushbabyblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG_4657-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shelterrock.co.za\" target=\"_blank\">Shelter Rock Adventures<\/a> is on a farm in Magaliesberg just half an hour\u2019s drive away from our Harties home and about 1.5 hours from Joburg.\u00a0 From the base camp the trail begins up into the Magaliesberg Mountains. It\u2019s a well-marked trail with green dot signs which kept us from getting distracted and veering off the path. \u00a0Graham and I, along with our friends Wes and Shannon, excitedly took on that mountain.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1006\" src=\"http:\/\/bushbabyblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/From-here-pic-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Shelter Rock hike\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bushbabyblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/From-here-pic-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/bushbabyblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/From-here-pic-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bushbabyblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/From-here-pic-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Hiking Route<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The entire route is 8km in total- there and back, but the distance app on Wes\u2019s phone told us we did more than 10km that day as we explored around\u00a0the summit too. The route began nice and calmly as we walked beside the grasslands of the foothills and greeted Blesbok in the distance. We then moved into a forested section set along a dry riverbed which was beautifully cool and enchanting. It has its own story. According to the info booklet, the rock was \u201cejected\u201d from the Magalies Mountain cliff face when it was struck by lightning 10000 years ago. Now it sits down below its mother mountain. We climbed it by grasping the nodules on the rock face caused by erosion. These made for easy hand and footholds and the views from on top were just fantastic. Even those in our group who are not friends with heights at the best of times agreed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bushbabyblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG_4667.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-996\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-996\" src=\"http:\/\/bushbabyblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG_4667-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Shelter Rock\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bushbabyblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG_4667-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/bushbabyblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG_4667-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bushbabyblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG_4667-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In its history, that rock acted as shelter for the indigenous people and it is said that during the Anglo Boer War the wives and families of the Boer soldiers took refuge there when the British soldiers were burning their farms and capturing war prisoners for the concentration camps below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bushbabyblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG_4671.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-999\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-999\" src=\"http:\/\/bushbabyblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG_4671-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"ladders Shelter Rock hike\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bushbabyblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG_4671-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bushbabyblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG_4671-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our walk continued up the mountain and over a few fences, armed with sturdy ladders to get us over to the other side. These fences act as boundaries between the farms which the Shelter Rock hike traverses through. On the summit we passed a few rock cairns which were part of ancient Boer War fort ruins. We found a spot out of the wind and devoured our packed lunch with views of Hartbeespoort Dam in the distance and farmlands below. It was challenging enough to make us feel we\u2019d achieved something that morning but gentle enough to make it a very enjoyable day outing. These all deserve appreciation.<\/p>\n<p>It was a day out in the great outdoors and was good for the soul.
